About Us

As Tolkien once wrote “Not all those who wander are lost.” My name is Matt and at this point I fall into the category of those who have been wandering for some considerable time and are hopelessly lost…

So, to describe this half of JustOffOut (check out the other half by clicking here!)… I’m from the UK, a place called Essex to be precise…  let’s not jump to conclusions though, I’m not orange with fake tan (although Vicki is Ginger), in reality I have a similar complexion to Voldemort. I also have a very sarcastic sense of humor, please take my writing with a pinch of salt! I have a black and tan Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Jasper, whom I’m sure to miss dearly, pictures and adorableness to follow…

Also, something I don’t usually throw out in an introduction but I suppose it’s probably worth a mention given the nature of this blog, I’m not vegetarian. Sure, I’ll eat vegetarian meals if they look good and yes, although It pains me to give Vicki the satisfaction to admit it, there has been the occasional bout of food envy for her choices, but for the majority of the time I love my food and I love my carnivorous ways…

I went to University in London to study law, I went on to get a first-class degree and have worked in a few different areas of law ranging from from Securitisation to Probate law. It’s all been a pretty interesting journey but i’m not entirely sure where to go with it all.

I’m also a bit of a nerd… I love video games, tv shows, books and I practically lived in the cinema back home. As a side note, getting a limitless card is the quickest way to ruin a movie date folks, it starts off all cute but oh so quickly you become ‘that’ couple. The couple who sneak in a cheeky pizza, some bevs and will swiftly nest down in their seat with coats-for-blankets and whip their shoes off… yes it’s fine, keep shuffling a few more seats down, we understand…

On to the travelling side of things. I went abroad a lot with my family when I was younger, this mostly involved exploring America, but would occasionally broaden to other countries like Jamaica. It was a great start and I’m so grateful to my parents for giving me those experiences as it really give me the desire to get out there and see the world. I would love to go back and re-explore some of this territory now I’m older, I don’t feel like a family trip to Vegas as a kid would be quite the same as visiting now! Although, Kudos for my parents for taking me to Vegas, those are some parenting goals!

When I was 16, I started college and signed up for an English Language and Literature class. I ended up being sat next to this ginger girl who had usually been out the night before and needed a McDonalds before realising where she was (we’ve all been there). This was my first experience of meeting Vicki, we ended up having a laugh every lesson and became friends straight away. When the time came we applied to the same university and both got in… Years later we decided to make a go of things and here we are…

The both of us in Kuala Lumpur

I hadn’t travelled for about 8 years when Vicki and I got together, with getting education out of the way and a lack of being adventurous on my part, there just hadn’t seemed to be a right time. 2016 arrived and Barcelona came calling. This was just 4 nights but for me it broke boundaries, I hadn’t properly been abroad without my family before (unless you count a school trip to Belgium), nor had I travelled with a significant other. As I say, 4 nights, not a long time but it really kick started the need to see more and Vicki seemed like an alright companion….

Fast forward to 2017, the call to travel beckoned again, this time we thought further afield and along came Bali. This was a real first for me, my first G Adventures tour and my first experience of Asia. I fell in love instantly, hence rushing back and stepping the game up with this trip…

So, to sum up, I’m in my mid 20’s and in this time I’ve met a lot of great people, made lifelong friends, bagged myself a law degree and worked in some great places… nothing to complain about right?

But It’s also in this time that I’ve come to realise that I don’t really know what I want from my life. This trip is one small way of stepping away from the distractions of day-to-day living and hopefully, but probably not, coming back home with some idea of how to fix that.  It’s probably cliché but stick with me if you will…

The Plan

So… it all kicks off with a mere 14 hour stopover in Doha, thankfully we fly with Qatar and they offer a free tour which should pass some time and gives a view of the capital. We’re aiming to travel around Thailand, Burma, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos before heading over to China.

We get to experience Chinese New Year in Beijing before beginning our TEFL teaching for 5 months wherever we may be. We then go on a 25 day tour around China, Hong Kong and Macau before flying off the Boracay in the Philippines. We have a brief stopover in South Korea before we head to Japan… Japan has been the top of my list for many many years, expect even more excitement for this. Lastly, we round off the Trip with a visit to Taipei in Taiwan and so concludes the journey…

I’m by no means a great traveller, I’ve been here and there but from my perspective this will likely be a beginner’s perspective on things and a baptism of fire until I get used to it all. I’m glad you’ve stumbled across this blog and I hope you’ll stay for some (hopefully) useful tips about all that we discover, for the pretty pictures and stories to tell  or just to have a good laugh at the idiot behind the keyboard…
